Swaddle Gauze Blankets

There is nothing sweeter than a new baby swaddled in a soft blanket. Make a one-of-a-kind gift with this fun and easy project. With so many luxurious gauze fabrics on the market, you will want make this again and again. The finished measurement of typical swaddle blankets is a 44” square. Depending on the width of the fabric, you will need 1 1/3 yards of fabric to achieve this size square.

Construction Instructions

1. Using a fabric pen, draw the 44” square on the fabric. Note: To achieve the best results when “squaring” the fabric, it may be helpful to lightly starch fabric or cut 44” square using a cutting mat with gridlines.

2. Using a rotary cutter, cut along lines. 3. To finish the edges, fold under ½” on opposite sides of the square, and press firmly. Then fold another ½” on same two sides and press firmly. Use your edge foot (#10 Bernina) and top stitch the hem down on two sides. Do the same for the remaining two sides. Gauze tends to stretch when hemming so at the ends you may have to fold in at an angle the remaining hem and backstitch. As an alternative, topstitch the edge hem with one of the many decorative machine stitches.
