1. Always use a stabilizer under your work. The type of stabilizer depends on the type of fabric. For woven fabrics, you can use a tear-a-wav stabilizer. For knits, iron-on stabilizers are preferred to prevent stretching.
2. For fusing the appliqué pieces to the base fabric, Wonder Under and Heat'n Bond work well. Be sure to read the directions that come with these products.
3. Always use an appliqué foot with your machine. Most machines come with a regular appliqué foot. An open-toed foot is usually available to purchase separately.
4. To achieve a pretty satin stitch, loosen the upper tension. This will produce an unbalanced stitch causing the upper threads to pull to the back side of the fabric.
5. The stitch length of the zigzag needs to be close enough that the fabric does not show between the stitches, but not so close that they get stuck under the foot.
6. The width of the zigzag will differ depending on the size of the appliqué. Most widths will be between 2 and 4.
7. When zigzagging around an outside curve, leave the needle in the outside edge of the curve and pivot every 3-5 stitches, keeping the stitches perpendicular to the edge of the appliqué, (to pivot on an inside curve, the needle is left in the appliqué piece itself).
8. When stitching around a square corner, zigzag along the appliqué until you get to the first corner, stop with the needle down at the point of the corner. Pivot 90 degrees and then walk the machine by using the hand wheel so that the first stitch is placed on the edge of the previous stitching. Continue stitching along the second side. You may need to push your fabric just a little to get over this hump.
