Fabric Requirement Adjustments
The fabric requirements may change from back of pattern when cutting skirts to utilize borders. Below is a chart to help you purchase the correct amount for 45" double border fabric. Considering straight of grain, facing and piping strips, this chart does not utilize all “between border” fabric but adds yardage for bodice.
Size | Amount in Yards |
---|---|
6mo.-12mo. | 2 |
18mo.-24mo. | 2 1/8 |
3-4 | 2 1/4 |
5-6 | 2 1/2 |
7-8 | 2 5/8 |
10-14 | 3 |
Double Border Print Tips
When using border prints keep "skirt to bodice" proportion in mind. A deeper border design works best on a larger size, in other words it does not come too far up the skirt.
When your border comes all the way down to the selvage, you will need to face bottom of skirt to create the hem. Fold up the hem allowance on the pattern piece. Place hem line just inside border. Cut skirts. Cut 3.5” strip of solid fabric from center of fabric the length of skirt front and skirt back. Seam right sides together. Press. Sew right sides together to bottom of skirt where facing meets edge of border. I recommend hand hemming as machine hem would distract from border. You may reduce depth of hem if you prefer, but I would still hand hem.
Another idea is adding a coordinating fabric to bottom of border.
