Creating the Perfect Slip

Slips may be utilitarian and worn with many different dresses.  Usually an A-line slip fits this description (Sophia's Slips VIEW A).  For special occasion dresses, the slip is paired with the dress.  Especially when sewing with batiste or sheer fabric for your dress.

As a general rule, a utilitarian slip will be at least 1/2” shorter than the dress.  The hem of a utilitarian slip can be a traditional hem or lace rolled to bottom raw edge.

The special occasion dress requires several considerations.  If you choose a high yoke (VIEW B) or longer yoke slip (VIEW C), you should adjust your yoke to match the yoke on your dress so you will not see a shadow thru the dress. If you adjust slip yokes, remember to adjust skirt lengths accordingly or your finished length will be inaccurate. Same applies to the hem of the special occasion dress and slip. The hemline of dress and the slip should be the same (lay on top of each other) although the slip is 1/2” shorter than the dress.  When you cut your dress skirts, measure length and cut your slip skirts 1/2" shorter.

Example: Hem for dress is 3” Hem for slip is 2.5” Stitching lines will be on top of each other.

Children’s Corner Sophia's Slips offers three views. VIEW A is an A-line style with instructions for lace rolled around hem. If you prefer lace and no hem for VIEWS B & C, cut away hem plus width of lace and roll lace to bottom of skirts.
